Rope Chain Size Guide: 4mm vs 5mm and 18–24 Inch Lengths for Your Pendant

Gold plated rope chain with lobster clasp and Virgen de Guadalupe pendant laid flat

Quick answer: for a large pendant such as a Virgen de Guadalupe medal, a 5mm rope chain gives the most balanced look, while a 4mm rope chain keeps it lighter for everyday wear. For length, 24 inches (about 60 cm) lets a statement pendant rest on the mid-chest over most shirts, and 18–20 inches keeps it close to the collarbone. Neck size and build change where any chain lands, so take a quick measurement before you choose.

What 4mm and 5mm mean on a rope chain

The millimeter number is the chain’s width: how thick it measures across the twisted strands. A rope chain is made of small links twisted together, so it catches light from many angles and looks fuller than a flat chain of the same width. Going from 4mm to 5mm adds 25% to the width. In person the difference is easy to see: the 5mm chain looks bolder and feels heavier on the neck.

4mm vs 5mm: which width suits your pendant?

4mm rope chain 5mm rope chain
Look Classic, understated Full, statement
Pairs best with Small to mid-size medals; everyday wear Large or stone-set pendants; a chain meant to be seen
Feel Lighter Heavier, more presence

A simple rule: the chain should look strong enough to carry the pendant. A tall, fully stone-set pendant on a very thin chain can look top-heavy and tends to flip, while a heavy chain can overpower a small medal.

Our Virgen de Guadalupe Iced Pendant Necklace is a good example. The pendant measures about 3 × 5.8 cm (6.3 cm tall including the bail), and it comes on a rope chain in either width: 5mm matches the pendant’s scale, and 4mm gives a slightly quieter look.

If you are buying a chain for a pendant you already own, check the bail, the loop at the top of the pendant. Measure its inside opening and make sure the chain and its clasp can pass through before you order.

Chain length guide: where 18, 20, 22 and 24 inches sit

Length Approx. cm Where it usually sits Good for
18" 46 cm At or just below the collarbone Small pendants, open necklines
20" 51 cm A little below the collarbone Everyday pendants, crew necks
22" 56 cm Upper chest Medals worn over a T-shirt
24" 60–61 cm Mid-chest Statement pendants, wearing over clothing

These placements are approximate for an average adult. On a wider neck or broader chest every length sits higher, so many people size up by 2 inches. Remember that a pendant adds its own drop: the bottom of a 6.3 cm pendant hangs roughly 2.5 inches below the point where the chain ends.

How to measure for the right length

  1. Wrap a piece of string or a soft tape measure around your neck at the height where you want the chain to rest.
  2. Mark where the ends meet, lay the string flat and measure it in inches or centimeters.
  3. To check a chain you already own, close the clasp, lay it flat and measure from end to end.
  4. For a pendant, decide where the pendant itself should sit, then remember it will hang slightly below the chain.

Buying a rope chain as a gift

If you don’t know the recipient’s neck size, 20–22 inches is a forgiving choice for most adults, and many men prefer 22–24 inches for a pendant worn over a shirt. For a religious medal, think about how the person will wear it: close to the skin every day, or visible over clothing. Lupe Oro offers 30-day returns and exchanges, so a length that doesn’t sit right can be exchanged.

Gold-plated rope chains: what to know

Many rope chains, including ours, are gold-plated: a layer of gold over a base metal. Our Virgen de Guadalupe rope chain is gold-plated copper. As the FTC’s jewelry buying guide explains, plating is a surface layer that can wear over time. To keep the finish bright, avoid perfume, lotions and cleaning products, take the chain off before showering or swimming, and store it on its own. Rope chain FAQ

Is a 5mm rope chain too thick?

For most adults, 5mm looks bold but is still comfortable to wear every day. It pairs best with larger pendants; with a small medal, 4mm or thinner usually looks more balanced.

What length rope chain is best for a pendant?

For a large pendant worn over clothing, 22–24 inches is the most common choice. For a pendant that sits close to the neck, choose 18–20 inches.

Is 60 cm the same as 24 inches?

Almost. 24 inches is about 61 cm, so a 60 cm chain is sold as a 24-inch chain and sits in the same place.

Can I wear a rope chain without a pendant?

Yes. Rope chains are made to stand on their own, especially at 4mm and wider. Browse our chains or see the full Virgen de Guadalupe collection.
